THE "REP" STUDY METHOD by: Toni

Let me introduce the "REP" study method. R-for read, E-for explain and P- for practice. This study method is one that I came up with. It is a simple 3 step method that puts an emphasis on understanding.

R- READ

When studying, it is important to read. I know it sounds weird but the truth is that not every one reads while studying. Some people simply prefer watching videos or listening to information while studying but that is not the most effective way to study. Reading is linked to memory because it is an active task. Reading is necessary in order to move information from short term to long term memory which is the goal behind studying. So that you can retrieve this information later on during the exam. Reading also leads to better understanding and increases the likelihood of you remembering and being able to reproduce the information.

E- EXPLAIN

Repetition is very important and that's how step 2 comes in. After reading, it is important that you can reproduce and explain back the information that you have read. Explaining leads to further understanding and helps to solidify the information studied into your long term memory. How do you know that you should eat food? Obviously because you are hungry. This is what explaining information to yourself and others does. It becomes second nature to see a concept that you have studied and just know exactly what it means and why it means that.

P- PRACTICE

Ever heard the saying practice makes perfect, it really does. The more you practice calculating, writing and answering questions, it is the more likely you are to know the information better and cement that information into your long term memory. Past papers are also always a great idea to see what type of questions have been asked before in the past. Practice really does make perfect and that is why it is included as step 3 in this study method.

All the BEST in your exams! I hope this study method helps you in your studying. Good luck!
